BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF SYRACUSE receives first-ever ‘ADOPT-A-CLUB’ award - Program Supports Volunteerism, STEM Education, Energy Efficiency, and Sustainability
SYRACUSE, N.Y.- National Grid today announced a multi-phase partnership with the Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation and Warner Energy to support the Boys & Girls Clubs of Syracuse at the agency’s E. Fayette St., Syracuse, New York location.
“Thank you ‘Adopt-A-Club,’ we are very grateful,” said Kathleen Centolella, board chair, Boys & Girls Clubs of Syracuse. “We are steadfast in our commitment to ensure that our community’s disadvantaged children and teens have greater access to quality programs and services that will enhance their lives and shape their futures.”
‘Adopt-A-Club’ was established by National Grid and the Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation to enrich the lives of youth and provide to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Syracuse, energy efficiency upgrades, STEM education through curriculum development, and volunteerism by way of tutoring, mentoring, and coaching. To complement the club’s environmental sustainability plan,
Warner Energy, will provide alternative energy solutions to reduce the facility’s carbon footprint.
“National Grid is pleased to support the Boys & Girls Clubs of Syracuse and help deliver a positive impact on the lives of students, their families, and educators alike,” said Ken Daly, president, National Grid, New York. “National Grid’s support of this program fits hand-in-glove with our commitment to customers and local programs which are designed to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and community leaders.”
The club’s gym and basketball court will receive a little TLC, thanks to the Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation, offering youth the opportunity to participate in healthy living activities and improved play areas.
“We couldn’t be more thrilled,” said Jim Boeheim, founder, Jim & Juli Boeheim Foundation. “The critical role the club plays in youth development and outreach makes the Boys & Girls Clubs of Syracuse an ideal recipient of the first-ever ‘Adopt-A-Club’ award, bringing together the necessary resources to inspire and enable all young people in the Syracuse area to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens.”
Warner Energy will install solar panels on the roof of the facility which is estimated to save the agency a total of approximately 800,000 kilowatt hours of energy over the 25 year lifetime of the system and reduce nearly 564 metric tons of carbon dioxide over 25 years, the equivalent of planting 14,473 treesor removing 118 vehicles from the road.
The immediate and long-term savings will assist in making the club an even stronger organization, all while reducing emissions and helping the environment. In addition, the state-of-the-art monitoring system being installed in the facilities can serve as a teaching and demonstration tool, showing real-time data collection and analysis.
“We are proud to be a part of ‘Adopt-A-Club’ and provide an innovative solution to environmental sustainability,” said Paul Drescher, principal, Warner Energy. “Warner Energy is a longtime supporter of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Syracuse and committed to making a positive and lasting contribution to the community and to help create a better environment.”
In 2012, National Grid’s Corporate Giving program provided $1.4 million to 300 community organizations in upstate New York for which employees gave their time, money, and talent to support a wide range of community organizations dedicated to youth development and encourage students to pursue careers in STEM education.
